SYNOPSIS

-

Their names are Moktar, Najat, Joseph, Gernaz, Duraid, Hayder, Kader, Esma… They fled Syria, Iraq, Iran, Congo, Morocco and Niger… Together, they occupy a church. They will risk their lives for asylum. Days of countdown begin; a test of strength in itself. Inside, Kader has assumed the role of leader, but, mysteriously, sometimes he is missing. Day by day, devotedly, Esma cares for this community. Exhaustion increases; tensions rise. But bonds are forged and strengthened. Between betrayal and brotherhood, the group will have to put itself to the test, and face up to the challenge.

Bénédicte Liénard was born in Borinage. She studied cinema at the Institut des Arts de Diffusion (Institute of Broadcast Arts) in Louvain-La-Neuve and graduated in 1988. Bénédicte then directed commissioned and produced several short and full- lenght documentaries. In 2002, she finished her feature-length fiction film “Une part du ciel” which was presented in the official “Un certain regard” selection at Cannes and at many other festivals (Toronto, San Sebastian, New York…). Since then, the director has directed several hard-hitting documentaries, widely distributed at festivals and on television including “D’arbres et de charbon” selected at the Vision du Réel Festival in Nyon in 2012 and “Sobre Las Brasas” directed with Mary Jiménez in 2013.

 

Mary Jiménez is originally from Peru. Firstly, she studied architecture in Lima and then, after her graduation, she studied production at the INSAS in Belgium. During her career as a film director, she has also taught film production in Belgium, Cuba and Switzerland. Her first full-length feature film, “Piano Bar”, won the arthouse film award. Since then she has directed around a dozen films selected at several festivals (Toronto, San Sébastian, Montreal, Berlin-Forum, Cinéma du Réel, Visions du Réel Nyon).

The Dei Popoli Festival devoted a retrospective of her work in 2015.
