SYNOPSIS

-

The collapse of the USSR has not brought the promised riches to Guria in western Georgia. The electricity supply is erratic, and policemen steal trolleybus cables to sell as scrap. Zuriko, a 45-year-old widower and hazelnut farmer, refuses the meagre sums that Italian buyers offer for his harvest. His best friend, Gela, helps him search for better buyers and introduces him to potential wives, but they inevitably fail to satisfy Zuriko’s disapproving mother-in-law. In Guria, Zuriko’s world constantly shifts between hardship and absurdity, beauty pageants and violence, love and sadness, and singing.
