SYNOPSIS

In the suburbs of Paris, Albert, a freelance reporter, vows to take revenge for the brutal murder of his young daughter while Sayoko, a Japanese female doctor, assists him in his quest for revenge. With Sayoko’s skillful guidance, the two get closer to the truth behind Albert’s daughter’s death, but it turns out that a mysterious cult and human traffickers are involved in the case. When they finally get close to the truth, Sayoko’s real intention is revealed…

Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Kobe, Japan, 1955) began his career in 1983 with “Kandagawa Wars”. His most notable works include “Cure” (1997), “Pulse”, which was screened in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2001, where it won the FIPRESCI prize; “Bright Future” (2002), selected in the Official Competition at the same festival; “Retribution”, screened out of competition at Venice in 2006; “Tokyo Sonata” (2008), which won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes; “Shokuzai” (2012), a miniseries presented in the Zabaltegi section at San Sebastian; “Journey to the Shore”, for which he won the Best Director prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in 2015. In 2017, he returned to competition in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes with “Before we vanish”, and in 2020 he was back in Venice with “Wife of a spy”, for which he won the Best Director Prize. “The Serpent’s Path” is his latest film, which was presented at the San Sebastian Festival in 2024.
